Celebrating Suffragettes and a Revolution

It was a mere 95 years ago that the 19th Amendment was passed, securing the right for women to vote. With women seen as the lesser sex for eons, this right did not come easy. It took years of political activism by the Suffragettes - the women who fought fearlessly for the freedom to vote both in the U.S. and overseas.

As the 2016 election nears, it's heartening to see two women candidates making waves. But, have women really achieved equality with men? We have certainly made gains, but there is more work to do. Everyday women around the globe fight for autonomy over their bodies, to hold public office, to work and garner equal wages, and to get an education.

JMJ Suffragette Collection Pays Tribute to a Revolution

The JMJ Suffragette collection brings history into focus, depicting the intensity of a time of change in necklaces, pins and bracelets. "Deeds Not Words" was the Suffragette motto, and the jewelry's historic images pay tribute to these brave souls who put their lives on the line in their peaceful (and not so peaceful) resistance.

We're not the only ones paying tribute this Fall - On October 23 we will see the release of the drama Suffragette starring Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter, and Meryl Streep. Written by playwright and Emmy award winner Abi Morgan (The Iron Lady), the film follows the militant tactics of British Suffragettes in the early 1900s who chained themselves to rails, smashed windows, set off bombs, and most famously, went on hunger strikes while incarcerated only to be brutally force fed. We're excited to go see it...and we'll report back!

Suffragette Fashion Revealed Secret Code

Suffragettes protested in style, wearing fashionable clothing, hats and jewelry. But fashion also played a role in the fight. Brooches discreetly revealed their political views by way of a secret color code: Green, White and Violet meant Give Women the Vote.

This led many jewelers of the time to create pieces with the colors using enamel and semi-precious stones such as amethyst, pearls and peridot.

Jan created the Suffragette collection to inspire and inform all women from girls to grandmothers by showing the Suffragettes in action. This season a small capsule collection is available by special order at 1-800-971-7717. Choose from pins, necklaces and a locket bracelet. Download a PDF of the collection here.
